Defining you ideal role.
As in all things now is the
time to find out if your ambitions
are realistic. Is there a
perfect job or is it an illusion
that you have been harbouring
for some time. Perhaps while
detailing your considerations
you have not been ambitious
enough and have undersold
your skills and experience.
Before you go any further
go back over your analysis
and review them against your
experience, skills, strengths
and qualifications to see
if they match.
At this point it is now define
the role you seek. Wrong.
It is only easy if you have
a clear picture of the role
you want. It varies for each
individual, many of us are
not even sure what direction
we want to move in let alone
how to get there.
Look at advertisements, log
onto job sites and read job
specs that provide background
detail on the duties and responsibilities
of each position. If there
are aspects of the role that
intrigue you keep reading,
if not put it away and move
on, shortly you will find
yourself able to identify
at a glance what roles are
suited to you and your job
search.
It may sound simple but believe
us, it is not that clear cut.
Seeing a job with one duty
you like the sound of is not
reason enough to throw everything
into securing it.
Be proactive, call someone
who holds a similar position
and ask his or her advice.
Don’t know anyone with
this job description? Well
don’t let that stop
you, call a company and ask
for the person holding that
position, explain your dilemma
and ask for their advice.
Undoubtedly they will be flattered
and will in most cases provide
you with an insight into the
role, highpoints and pitfalls.
If you’re ideal job
just isn’t a realistic
ambition at this time due
to lack of experience, skills
or qualifications, then move
on. Look for the position
immediately previous to this
and aim to secure it. By looking
ahead then to the next position
you will ensure that you acquire
the skills, experience and
qualifications required to
secure this position.
Keep your plan firmly in
mind, be positive, learn and
develop to ensure that in
the years ahead you will have
firmly positioned yourself
and will be ready when the
time comes.
